A Walk Through Cologne: Ehrenfeld to Nippes

Aug 2026

Why photograph at all

I've often asked myself why I photograph. Am I even a photographer? I'm no expert on settings, I don't have a recognizable style. So what am I actually looking for?

Why chase the "perfect shot" anyway — millions of pictures are made every day. Where do they all land? What am I even supposed to do with them afterward? I have a big pile of — ten thousand — pictures I've never even edited, waiting for what and when?

The route

On a hot day in the city, I took public transport instead of the bike to an appointment. On the way back, I found the pleasure of having the slower speed, to rediscover details from places I'd been before — walking some stretches, taking the metro for others. It doesn't have to be the perfect frame. It's about moving through the city with open eyes and mind. This keeps me awake.

This series follows that route: from Ehrenfeld, through Friesenplatz and Lohsestraße's underground stations, back up to street level and on to Florastraße in Nippes.

And so I keep photographing —
not because I have answers,
but because questioning myself is how I move forward
